Feingold, Kohl, Moore Write FEMA in Support of Federal Emergency Assistance for Wisconsin

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Senators Russ Feingold and Herb Kohl, and Representative Gwen Moore wrote to the Federal Emergency Management Agency in support of any appeal from the state of Wisconsin for federal assistance to deal with the recent storms. The text of the letter is below:

W. Craig Fugate
Administrator
Federal Emergency Management Agency
500 C Street, SW, Room 700
Washington, DC 20472

Dear Mr. Fugate,

On Friday, Governor Jim Doyle declared a state of emergency in Milwaukee County following severe storms and flash flooding throughout the county. At least nine counties are performing assessments. The storms destroyed homes and damaged many roadways and other critical infrastructure. Dozens of residents are now homeless, homes have been destroyed and property damaged, businesses and public buildings have been significantly damaged, and the area is still recovering from extensive power outages and interruption of critical services. To make matters worse, more rain is predicted for later this week.

We anticipate that the State of Wisconsin will appeal for federal assistance to deal with these record storms. We urge you to give any appeal submitted by Governor Doyle your immediate and full consideration.

Sincerely,

Senator Russ Feingold
Senator Herb Kohl
Representative Gwen Moore
